Why Motivation Is Bullshit
We all have dreams and goals. In fact, think of one thing right now that you really want. What's stopping you from getting or achieving it? It's usually self-doubt, lack of motivation or both. Am I right? Here's what I've found to be true about achieving my goals... motivation is bullshit. You're never going to want to do it. The problem is, we wait until we want to do it and when that doesn't happen, we give up.
I thought I was the only one who felt this way until I found a motivational speaker by the name of Mel Robbins. She's made a career of helping people get what they want by just doing it, even when you don't want to. We are all busy and tired and unmotivated most of the time. And I've noticed for myself that right before I go to do something, I really don't want to do it. Good example- this blog post you're reading right now. Already today, I went to yoga, meal prepped, worked on a project for hours, and I really didn't feel like blogging.
So what did I do? I got my iPad, sat my ass down and started blogging. I didn't even consider that I could just forget about it this week and binge watch Netflix. And I surely didn't think about the fact that I will need to make dinner soon and we know I am not going to want to do that later haha. I just sat down and started doing it. This week I have been doing a lot of this, and it's really paying off! I made it a goal to get my butt to yoga more. And I did it. And guess what? When the time came to go, I didn't feel like going. But I did it anyway, and I feel amazing.
I am started to see the proof in my own life that we are never ever going to feel like doing the things we need to do to reach our goals. We just need to do them. When you want to achieve a big goal, say weight loss, you need to make daily changes in your routine to get there. It has to be a daily commitment. Be honest with yourself. Are you willing to push through and make the changes? If the answer is a big no, then let go of that goal.
I love music. In fact, I love music more than just about anything in the world. But I admitted to myself that I am not about to spend every waking moment after work practicing guitar to get good enough to teach or play out. I have other goals. If I wanted to bad enough, I would do it. But I don't. And I accepted that and moved on. So when you want to accomplish a goal be real with yourself and don't beat yourself up if it's something you don't want to dedicate your time to. Even if it's something you love. You can do anything, but you can't do everything.
This coming week, I am giving it all I've got again. I am pushing myself to go to yoga more! I also have a photography class this Monday which only adds to the busyness but I can do this and so can you. Don't give up on your dreams. And don't feel bad when you don't feel like it. Just do it anyway. It's worth the payoff. Have a great week my loves.
